How to Prepare for a First Meeting With Someone You've Only Talked to Online

✈️

You've been talking for weeks, maybe months. You feel like you know this person. And in some ways you do — you know how they think, how they communicate, what they care about.

But you've never been in the same room.

The first in-person meeting is its own thing. It's not the same as the relationship you built online, and trying to treat it as a continuation of that will throw you off. Here's how to show up for it well.

Reset Your Expectations Before You Land

The person you've been talking to online is real — but they're the online version. Real people have presence, energy, rhythm. They take up space differently than a voice or a photo. They have a smell, a way of moving, nervous habits. All of that is new information.

Don't walk in expecting the conversation to pick up exactly where your last call left off. Walk in expecting to meet someone for the first time. Because in a meaningful way, you are.

Let Go of the Script

You probably have an idea of how this goes. The first moment. The conversation. The way it feels.

Let go of it. Scripted expectations make you less present — you're comparing what's actually happening to what you planned, rather than being in the room.

The best first meetings are usually described as easier than expected — because both people stopped performing and just paid attention to each other.

Manage the Logistics So They Don't Manage You

If you're meeting in a different country, get the logistics settled before you're overwhelmed by them. Know where you're going. Have local currency. Know how transportation works. Have a backup plan if something falls through.

This sounds obvious. But a person who is stressed about logistics is a person who is not fully present — and showing up scattered is not the impression you want to make, or the experience you want to have.

A guided trip — where someone else has handled the details — solves this completely.

Go Somewhere You Can Actually Talk

A loud bar or a busy tourist attraction on the first meeting is a mistake. You want to be able to hear each other, to have some privacy, to have space to let the conversation go where it goes.

A quiet restaurant, a walk somewhere interesting, a coffee in a calm setting — these all create room for actual connection. The environment shapes the conversation more than most people expect.

Bring Your Real Self

You've been on your best behavior online. That's natural. But the goal of the first meeting is to begin to see and be seen — not to continue the performance.

Say the thing you're actually thinking. Admit the thing you're actually nervous about. If something is unfamiliar or confusing about the setting or the culture, ask about it genuinely rather than pretending you know.

Real interest in someone — including honest curiosity about their world — is one of the most attractive qualities you can bring to a first meeting.

How to Follow Up After

Something short, specific, genuine. Reference something real from the meeting — not "I had a great time" but "I've been thinking about what you said about X." That tells them you were actually paying attention.

And then give it some room to breathe. You don't have to figure out everything immediately.
