What Your "Type" Says About You — and When to Question It

💬

Everyone has a type. The question isn't whether you have one — it's whether yours is helping you or hurting you.

What a Type Actually Is

Your type is a pattern of attraction — a cluster of qualities (physical, personality-based, behavioral) that reliably pull you toward certain people.

Some of those qualities are genuinely about fit. They reflect what actually works for you, what you're compatible with, what creates real connection in your life.

Some of them are about familiarity. They reflect what's known, what's been reinforced by experience, what the nervous system has mapped as "attractive" based on people who were important to you early — regardless of whether those relationships were healthy.

The problem is that these two sources of attraction feel identical. The genuine fit and the familiar wound both feel like a spark.

When Your Type Is Working Against You

A few signals:

Your type has a consistent failure mode. If your last three relationships ended for roughly the same reason, that's worth noticing. The common variable isn't the relationships — it's what you were attracted to.

Your type skews toward unavailability. People who are drawn consistently to emotionally unavailable partners, to people who need to be chased, to people who are intermittently interested — are often confusing the activation of their nervous system with the presence of chemistry.

Your type is really specific in ways that cut against compatibility. "Tall, dark hair, confident, a little mysterious" isn't a type that helps you find someone to build a life with. It's a description of a sensation.

Your type has nothing to do with what you say you want. If you say you want stability and honesty but your attractions consistently run toward unpredictability, the conflict is worth examining.

When Your Type Is Fine

Not everyone's type is a wound. Sometimes you know what you're compatible with and your attraction reliably points you toward it.

There's also nothing wrong with physical preferences — they're real, and attraction matters. The question is whether the physical preferences are running the show in a way that crowds out actual compatibility assessment.

Questioning Your Type Without Abandoning It

This isn't about forcing yourself to be attracted to people you're not attracted to. You can't override the nervous system with a decision.

What you can do is notice. When you feel that pull — particularly the sudden, overwhelming kind — get curious before you act on it. Is this chemistry or recognition? Does this person have the qualities I actually value, or just the ones that feel familiar?

And conversely: when someone doesn't immediately trigger that pull but seems genuinely compatible, give it more time than you normally would before deciding.

The feeling of "spark" is useful information. It's not the whole picture.

What This Has to Do With International Dating

Many Western men who pursue international relationships describe a similar experience: something clicked that hadn't clicked before. Values alignment, communication style, relational tempo — something fit in a way that their domestic dating experience hadn't provided.

That can be genuine fit. It can also be a new form of the familiar — different surface, same underlying dynamic.

The work of understanding your own patterns matters regardless of which culture the person is from.
